About myself ... I grew up in the small southeast Nebraska town of Filley. I attended UNL after high school, graduating with a bachelor's degree in journalism in 1979. I married in 1981 and my wife and I have raised 3 children in Grand Island. After working in journalism at the Daily Independent for 11 years, I went back to school in 1992 and earned a master's degree in community counseling from UNK in 1995. Our family is active in worship and activities at Peace Lutheran Church.
The journey ... I was in journalism for 15 years before changes in my career and life resulted in an evaluation of the direction of my life. I recalled that even in my younger days people have openly talked to me about problems in their life. I decided to change careers and enter the counseling program at UNK. My faith has guided my life. I trust that God has a purpose for me and pray that He uses me to help people gain balance in their life spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically.
The process ... It is important to me that clients feel comfortable and secure to honestly share the current issues in their life. It is important that clients shop for the right counselor for their needs. Confidentiality is the beginning of the process and must be maintained throughout and even beyond the counseling relationship. The majority of my training lies in men's issues and family issues. I have received training in domestic violence issues and the behavior problems of adolescents. I enjoy the challenge of working with an entire family or helping a married couple get back on track. If you are willing to do the work and be challenged, counseling can be very rewarding.
